Food Options
[Meal Plan] [Other Options] [Feast] [Hafla!] [Eating Kit Hire]Canterbury Faire offers a variety of ways to ensure you get enough sustenance:
- free breakfasts for all on Monday-Sunday, free evening soup kitchen on Sunday 31st
- a catered meal plan
- a magnificent feast
- good site food preparation facilities
- The Mangy Mongol and other merchants
A daily hearty breakfast of porridge and fruit offerings is included in the general site fee. This runs from MONDAY until SUNDAY, i.e. is not available on the first "casual camping" weekend.
As with most SCA events, you will be expected to bring your own feasting gear, cutlery, crockery and tea towels.
Optional Catered Meal Plan
We are pleased to offer an optional meal plan so that you need not be burdened with supplies and cooking pots.
The tasty, nutritious and very moderately-priced catered meal plan includes:
- Sunday evening soup kitchen (like breakfasts, this is free to all CF attendees)
- Monday lunch and dinner
- Tuesday lunch and dinner
- Wednesday lunch and dinner
- Thursday lunch (NB: no dinner on Thursday as this is the night of the Faire Feast and Halfa - choose one if you wish)
- Friday lunch and dinner
- Saturday lunch and dinner
A vegetarian option is not currently planned, but this may change if demand is sufficient.
Adults participating in the meal plan are required to contribute approximately 2 hours work assisting with cooking, serving, cleanup, etc. It's a great way to meet people and catch up on the gossip... You will be asked to choose your tasks when you sign in at the gatehouse.
Price: Adults $65; Children 12 and under $40
Other Eating Options
House Draco Veridis are again likely to be again offering their superlative breakfast buns each morning, delivered to your place of repose.
On the evening of Faire Feast, a Hafla will be running in the marquee, for those who prefer inexpensive or less formal dining.
There are three kitchens on site, which can be used by anyone; some equipment is available (eg pots and pans). You are expected to keep the kitchen areas clean and dispose of food scraps and other waste appropriately.
Please be aware that the catered meal cooks will have priority access to the main kitchen from 10am until dinner hour each day. On the day of the Feast, the feast cook will have exclusive access to the main kitchen from noon until the feast finishes. There are other kitchens on site which can be used as alternatives if need be, one in the Royal Ward and one in the Tui Lodge.
Finally, there may be vendors at the Market offering food and drink, including delicacies such as sorbet or fudge.
See the general Faire information regarding cooking facilities at the Faire site.
Feast
As usual, Canterbury Faire will host a Faire Feast consisting of a delicious sequence of dishes. We recommend you book early, as seating numbers are limited and invariably sell out. However, there is a second option for those who prefer: the Hafla (see below) will be running concurrent with the Feast.
Hafla!
The Halfla will be held on the evening of the feast at Canterbury Faire, for those seeking a lighter evening meal. To be served outside on the main field (weather permitting, see note) just beyond the Mangy Mongol, at 7 of the clock. There will also be eastern-style music and drumming for the enjoyment of the patrons and dancers. Please bring your own rug or cushion on which to sit. Non-alcoholic drinks will be provided in some quantity.
Help with setting up -- primarily the lifting of tables, and setting thereof), clearing away (the reverse of the previous) and the cleaning of dishes (a minimal quantity of, fates willing) would be most appreciated. Such willing or particularly enthusiastic gentles should seek out Lord Kotek in the Domus Camen/Cultus Faunus encampment. (He's the one cooking, probably wearing red, and a turban) or volunteer ahead of time.
Bookings are strictly limited to 40 people, $5 per person of any ilk - whether vegetarian or meat-eater, adult or child. Please advise Kotek of any allergies and we'll try to work around them.
Note: If the weather is NOT a warm, still and dry evening, the alternate venue will be the hall in the Tui Lodge. Any change will be announced by heralds and a large sign in the 'Mong on the day)
Eating Kit Hire
If you wish to hire eating kits for the event (drinking vessel, plate, bowl, spoon, fork, knife, napkin, tea-towel), Lord Bjorn is privately offering them for $5.00 for the week, with a $5.00 refundable deposit. You will be able to pick them up from him at the start of the event. Contact Lord Bjorn directly to reserve a kit, first come first served. Note: this is a private arrangement, not part of your event booking.
